Liz worked for the State Department before attending law school for about five years. She also spent her time at the United States Agency for International Development between 1989 and 1993. 

After 1993, she started working at a consulting firm called Armitage Associates LLP, founded by Richard Armitage. She then took a job as a Defense Department official followed by being the Deputy Secretary of State.

After finishing up her law school, she started practicing law at the law firm of White & Case. Later on, Liz worked as a member of the World Bank Group as an international law attorney and consultant.

Recommended by then-Secretary of State, Colin Powell, Liz Cheney was appointed as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs in 2002. 

The Sunday Times along with many other renowned news outlets praised Cheney’s appointment saying and I quote, “a measure of the seriousness with which the administration was taking Middle East programs for literacy, education, and reform”.

During her time there, she was given authority over the Middle East Partnership Initiative, designed to “foster increased democracy and economic progress in a troubled region”. The main task of Liz in the multimillion program was to channel and assign money to prescreened groups.

After working at the State Department for two years, Liz left her to work for the Bush – Cheney 2004 reelection campaign. Cheney took part in the campaign called  “W Stands for Women” as an initiative to target female voters.

During her course of time at this position, she coordinated as well as promoted democracy and expanded education and economic opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa alongside then-Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, C. David Welch.
